Spring: Liver, Expansion, and Wood

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the five elements – Fire, Earth, Wood, Water, and Metal – play a vital role in understanding our world. Spring is associated with the Wood element, symbolising birth and expansion.

Spring ushers in new beginnings, longer days, and a hint of warmth, but it also brings strong winds, particularly in Auckland. This season encourages growth and outward movement after winter’s hibernation.

The liver, a key organ associated with the Wood element, plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body. However, spring’s winds can stir up Liver energy, leading to various issues related to the Liver.

Hay Fever and the liver

  • Spring often triggers Hay Fever, a common issue in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Liver energy disturbance can result in reversed lung energy, leading to symptoms like itchy noses, sniffles, and sneezing.

Emotions and the Liver

  • The Liver is linked to anger when unbalanced and expansion when in harmony. Stagnation of Liver energy can lead to stress, frustration, anger, and physical symptoms such as tight neck and shoulders, PMS, and digestive problems.
  • Holding onto anger unnecessarily can stagnate Liver Qi and prevent growth and expansion. Spring, being the season of the Liver, may magnify feelings of anger, making it an ideal time for self-reflection.

Supporting the Liver in Spring

  • Embrace green foods like broccoli, beans, peas, and kale, as the colour associated with the Liver is green. These foods promote Liver Qi flow.
  • Engage in movement and exercise to encourage the smooth flow of Qi. Even a short walk or gentle yoga can benefit the Liver.
  • Protect yourself from strong spring winds as they can disturb Liver energy. Dress appropriately to shield against the elements.

Embrace the Spirit of Spring

  • Spring signifies the new beginnings and expansion. It is the perfect time to contemplate what aspects of physical, mental, and soul growth you want to embody more in your life.
